Anna Mildred Howard

April 23, 1920 - Jan. 24, 2014

Anna Mildred Howard, the matriarch of the Sarpy Creek area, passed away Jan. 24, 2014, in the Big Horn County Memorial Hospital. She lived a long, productive and happy life.

She was born April 23, 1920, in Hysham to parents, Jess and Leetah Campbell Gamble. She was raised on Sarpy with her seven siblings and attended grade school at the Lackey and Beaver Creek Schools. She graduated from Hysham High School.

In 1940, she married the neighbor, Rich Howard, and moved up the road to the Howard Ranch, where she spent the next 69 years. In 2010, she moved to the Fountainview Care Center in Forsyth.

In her early days, Mildred enjoyed riding and helping Rich with ranch work. She also enjoyed working in her yard and raising beautiful flowers. She was an expert leather carver, and in later years she began oil painting. Many were blessed with gifts of her talents. Mildred was also a talented musician and enjoyed playing her organ.

Her husband, Rich, her parents and five siblings preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Lee (Linda) of Sarpy; her grandsons, Trent (Jill) of Bismarck, ND, and Chad (Staci) of the family ranch. Her great grandchildren Megan, Ashley, Haley, Cutter, Holden and Morgan also survive her. Also surviving her are her sister, Ruth Hodges of Rupert, ID, and her brother, Dave (Donna) Gamble of Cheyenne, WY, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, Jan. 31st at the Community Presbyterian Church in Hysham. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.

The family would like to express appreciation for the wonderful care Mildred received at the Fountainview Care Center in Forsyth.

Memorials may be made, if desired, to the Community Presbyterian Church of Hysham, The American Legion Post # 92 Auxiliary in support of Girls’ State or to the Big Horn County Historical Museum in Hardin. Print this post
