Charles Francis Stack (July 22, 1919 - February 16, 2010)

MOUNT ANGEL - Charlie, 90, died Tuesday at the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center in Mt. Angel. He was born in Shefton, Web., to Anna (Lane) and Charles Leo Stack. His family moved to Circle, Mont. in 1923. Charlie graduated from Circle High School in 1936 before attending the Montana School of Mines in Butte. He managed two Farmers Union service stations until he was drafted into the Army in 1940. Charlie served in the Signal Corps for 53 months, much of it in the South Pacific. He married Nadine Baker in Seattle on June 3, 1948, and went to work for the Civil Aviation Authority, predecessor agency to the Federal Aviation Administration, as an air traffic controller in Alaska.
They lived in Annette Island, Cape Yakataga, Nome and Fairbanks.
After he retired from the FAA in Fairbanks in 1976, he worked for Alaska International Air and was treasurer for the Catholic Church of Northern Alaska. In 1978, they moved to Lyons, where they built a house and lived until 2003, when they moved to Sublimity. They moved to Mt. Angel in 2008, Charlie was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Jordan and the Knights of Columbus, St. Anthony Council in Sublimity.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Nadine of Mount Angel; Sons, Bernard, Stephen, Mark, Kevin, Vincent and Sean Stack all of Fairbanks, Alaska; Timothy Stack of Phoenix, Ariz., and Damian Stack of Seattle, Wash.; Daughters, Kathleen Wiese of Milford, N.J., Eileen Loftus and Nora Simmons both of Fairbanks, Alaska; Monica Mailloux of Charlevoix, Mich., and Patricia Sampson of Stayton; Sisters, Mary Artz of Great Falls, Mont., Rachel Nagel of Stayton, and Delores Farrell of Sitka, Alaska. Grandchildren - 37, Great-grandchildren - 18. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Martin; and 2 daughters, Brigid McCoy, and an infant.
Recitation of Rosary was at 7 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2010 and Mass of Christian Burial as at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 20, 2010 both at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Jordan. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in his name to St. Mary and Regis Catholic Schools in Stayton and Lourdes Charter School in Jordan. Serving the family North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
Charles was the manager of Hysham Farmer’s Union for several years and his wife Nadine and her sister Bernice Baker Criswell are natives of Treasure Co. and went to high school in Hysham. Print this post
