Colonel John Charles Mouat

Colonel John Charles Mouat, U.S. Air Force Retired went to be with his LORD on June 24, 2015. Colonel Mouat was a much decorated veteran of World War 2, The Korea War and the View Nam War.

He was born on a ranch in Montana and grew up in the midst of the Great Depression in the 30’s. He enlisted as a private in the United States Army when the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and was stationed at Fort Myers, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D. C.

Deciding he wished to fly, he went to Boling Field in the District of Columbia and applied for training as an Aviation Cadet. He graduated from pilot training in January of 1943 and spent twenty-six years as an Air Force pilot and Budget Officer.

Colonel Mouat’s Air Force service included a tour in the European Theater during World War II flying B-17 Flying Fortresses from a base in England on bombing missions over Germany. There he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the group citation ribbon and the commendation ribbon.

He was injured on a mission over the Ruhr Valley. He served a tour of duty with the Strategic Air Command from 1947 to 1950 and spent three years from 1950 to 1953 flying combat during the Korean War. He spent a 3 year tour in Germany and another tour in Japan. He graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Colonel Mouat was sent to the George Washington University under the air force plan o advanced schooling for selected officers from which he received his Bachelor of Arts with distinction. He also received his Master of Business Administration with Distinction from the Air University Institute of Technology, United States Air Force.

After retiring from the Air Force, he was asked to work in the Office of Budget for President’s Nixon and Ford with an office in the Pentagon which he did for about 10 years. After leaving the Pentagon, he returned to his home state of Montana to operate a Dude Ranch business: Montana’s Wild West Adventures & Stillwater Valley Ranch.

Later he sold the ranch and moved to Florida. While living in Florida and part time in an Arkansas vacation home, Colonel Mouat began his writing career, writing and publishing 7 books on various subjects including one on his life. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, the former Carolynn Swenke Brown, three sons, Mike (Karen), Steve (Cynthia), Travis (Toni) and grandson, Kevin (Michelle) Mouat, daughter, Teresa (Brian) Gauthier, brother, Donald (Ivene) Mouat, sister, Ellen (Jim) Langston and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Colonel Mouat was predeceased by 3 brothers Jim, Bill and Douglas, daughter, Susan and son, John David.

A two-hour viewing will be held on Sunday, November 15th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Jefferson Chapel of the Metropolitan Funeral Home, 5755 Castle Wellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315.

Colonel Mouat will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C. on November 16 at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements for Colonel Mouat are being handled by The North Brevard Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local SPCA, The Wounded Warrior project or the Salvation Army. Print this post
